Reading the mechanic

The central distinction in Book of Dead is between an ordinary symbol and the special symbol selected for the free-spin sequence. The provider describes a symbol chosen at random before those spins begin. That choice applies for the sequence, rather than being a new choice on every spin. [1]

Expansion is conditional. Regular combinations are evaluated first; the selected symbol expands over the three positions on its reel only when the expansion can create an additional prize on active paylines. Reading “expanding symbol” as “every appearance fills a reel” would miss that condition. The expanded symbols do not have to occupy adjacent reels to form a winning combination. [1]
